A barcode — the GTIN or UPC — is the identifier that lets your product listing attach to the canonical product card where shopping AIs compare sellers and hand out the sale. Missing barcodes are one of the most common, and most fixable, blockers we see.
Why barcodes matter
Without an identifier, your listing can still be found when a shopper names your store. But in the anonymous searches where most demand starts, it floats unattached — while the product card it should be on lists your competitors instead.
How to add them in Shopify
- Export your product list from Shopify admin.
- Fill the Barcode (GTIN/UPC) column from your supplier catalogs — start with your best sellers.
- Re-import the file.
Verifying
Spot-check five products and confirm the barcode shows on the product page. Shopping surfaces re-crawl feeds regularly, so expect movement within a scan or two. It won't guarantee ranking — nobody outside these companies can promise that — but it removes a hard blocker your competitors may not even know exists.
On WooCommerce
The public WooCommerce feed doesn't expose a barcode field, so Pulse can't measure your GTIN coverage from the outside — we mark it not applicable rather than counting it against you. Adding barcodes still helps shoppers and shopping surfaces find your products; it just isn't something Pulse can score on Woo the way it can on Shopify.
