Your shoppers' languages

Your twin replies in the language each shopper writes in, its storefront texts come in 13 languages, and you keep writing your knowledge in your own.

You don't need to translate anything for your twin. Write your catalog and knowledge in the language you work in; your twin talks to each shopper in theirs.

Replies in the shopper's language

The twin replies in the language the shopper writes in, and stays in it unless they switch. A shopper in Munich can ask in German about a catalog written in English and get the answer in German. When a message doesn't show a language — just a product name, "hi", or an emoji — the twin uses the language of the storefront the shopper is on if it's a translated one (such as /de/ or /fr/), and otherwise the language of your catalog.

When your catalog and knowledge are in a different language from the shopper's, the twin translates their meaning faithfully. It doesn't add facts or soften them in translation.

What stays exactly as you wrote it

Some things are never translated, because a shopper has to find them on your site or type them at checkout:

  • product names;
  • option values, such as sizes and colors;
  • prices;
  • discount codes.

The twin keeps these exactly as they are in your store, and may explain them in the shopper's language — for example, what a size means.

Storefront texts in 13 languages

The twin's own texts on your storefront — the launcher button, the title, the greeting, buttons such as "Add to cart" and "View cart", the messages while it's working, "Start over", "Open as a full page" and "Was this helpful?" — come in 13 languages:

  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • Finnish
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Norwegian (Bokmål)
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Spanish
  • Swedish

They follow the language of your storefront: a shopper on your French storefront sees the French texts. A storefront in another language shows them in English.

To keep this working, leave the launcher label and greeting at their defaults — "Ask our expert" and the standard greeting — on the app's Widget page and in the theme editor. The same goes for the title, "[your shop] expert". Once you write your own text, it shows exactly as you wrote it, in every language. See Install and set up.

The "Ask our expert" page's own labels are in English for now; the twin's answers on it still follow the language of the question.

Your questions arrive in your language

When the twin can't answer a question about your shop, it passes it to you as an open question on the Knowledge page. That question is written in the language of your catalog and knowledge — not the shopper's — because it's for you. A question asked in Japanese reaches you in English if your shop works in English. Answer it in your own language, and the twin uses your answer in whatever language the next shopper writes. See The knowledge map and open questions.

The same goes for everything you teach the twin: one language is enough. Write your notes, answers and edits the way you'd write them for your own team.
